Atlantic Danish Slavery

The Danish West Indies and a forgotten trade

Denmark-Norway ran forts on the Gold Coast and sugar plantations in the Danish West Indies. It trafficked around 100,000 Africans and later sold the islands to the United States, quietly closing the ledger on its slaving past.

Damage
Danish Caribbean plantations and slave trade produced colonial sugar under terror labor.

Lives lost
Tens of thousands trafficked and killed in Danish Atlantic circuits (order-of-magnitude)

Record Points

  • Danish ships carried roughly 100,000 enslaved Africans, mainly to St Croix, St Thomas, and St John.
  • The 1733 St John uprising was one of the earliest large slave revolts in the Americas.
  • Denmark banned the trade in 1803 but kept people enslaved until an 1848 revolt forced emancipation.
  • Copenhagen sold the islands to the United States in 1917, offloading the colonial legacy.
  • Danish public memory long treated the trade as a minor footnote rather than state policy.
