Bleiburg and Postwar Killings
1945 columns, reprisals, and contested Croatian memory
In May 1945 retreating NDH formations and civilians were turned back at Bleiburg and driven into Yugoslav partisan custody. Forced marches and liquidations followed. Croatian politics later sacralized Bleiburg in ways that can whitewash Ustaša crimes already vaulted elsewhere.
Damage
End-of-war forced marches and killings produced mass death later instrumentalized in nationalist memory.
Lives lost
Tens of thousands dead across Bleiburg-related columns and postwar liquidations (estimates contested)
