Katyn Massacre

NKVD execution of the Polish officer elite

In spring 1940 the NKVD executed Polish officers, police, and civilians held after the 1939 partition of Poland. The USSR blamed Nazi Germany until partial admission in 1990; full archival reckoning remains contested in Russian politics.

Damage
Soviet NKVD shot thousands of Polish officers and intelligentsia in 1940, then lied for decades.

Lives lost
About 22,000 Polish prisoners murdered across Katyn and related sites
