Operation Storm and Krajina Expulsion
1995 Croatian offensive and Serb flight from the Krajina
Croatia's August 1995 Operation Storm recaptured the Krajina and triggered the flight and expulsion of most local Serbs. It remains the largest single instance of ethnic cleansing in the Croatian theater of the 1990s wars.
Damage
Operation Storm expelled Krajina Serbs in a rapid ethnic-cleansing offensive.
Lives lost
Hundreds killed; ~150,000–200,000 expelled
Record Points
- The offensive collapsed the Republic of Serbian Krajina within days.
- Roughly 150,000 to 200,000 Serbs fled; killings, lootings, and house burnings marked the aftermath.
- ICTY prosecutions addressed command responsibility while political Croatia still celebrates Storm as liberation pure and simple.
- Return of Serb refugees stayed partial; property and demographic reversal were never fully undone.
- European recognition of Croatian victory often soft-pedaled the expulsion file.
