Operation Vistula

1947 forced resettlement of Ukrainians and Lemkos

In 1947, Polish authorities launched Akcja Wisła to deport roughly 140,000 Ukrainians, Boykos, and Lemkos from southeastern Poland to the Recovered Territories. Official pretext was crushing UPA remnants; the design scattered communities to erase territorial density and accelerate Polonization.

Damage
Polish communist security forces deported Ukrainian and Lemko communities from the southeast to scatter and assimilate them.

Lives lost

Record Points

  • Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches were closed, seized, or destroyed.
  • Resettlement plots in the west were often the worst land and housing.
  • Collective punishment hit civilians for guerrilla activity they did not control.
  • Polish state apologies decades later did not restore the destroyed settlement pattern.
