Partitions of Poland

A state erased by its neighbors

Between 1772 and 1795 Russia, Prussia, and Austria dismembered the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and wiped it off the map for 123 years. Partition became the model for treating a European nation as divisible spoils.

Damage
Tripartite partition erased the Polish state and subordinated populations to imperial drafts and law.

Lives lost
Uprising repressions and imperial wars killed tens to hundreds of thousands across the long nineteenth century

Record Points

  • Three partitions in 1772, 1793, and 1795 transferred Polish territory and people to three empires.
  • Prussia and Russia suppressed the Polish language and Catholic institutions in their zones.
  • The 1830 and 1863 uprisings against Russian rule were crushed with executions and mass deportation to Siberia.
  • Prussian Germanization policy targeted Polish landholding and schooling in the west.
  • Poland regained independence only in 1918, and its borders were carved again by Nazi and Soviet occupiers in 1939.
