Volhynia and Eastern Galicia Massacres
1943-44 OUN-UPA ethnic cleansing of Poles
During the German occupation, Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists / Ukrainian Insurgent Army units carried out organized mass killings of Polish villagers in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. The campaign aimed at ethnically clearing contested borderlands. Polish retaliation killings followed; they do not erase the scale of the UPA-led slaughter.
Damage
Ukrainian nationalist formations massacred Polish civilians across Volhynia and Eastern Galicia in 1943-44.
Lives lost
Tens of thousands of Polish civilians killed (estimates commonly 40,000-100,000 across the campaign)
Record Points
- Peak killings in mid-1943 hit entire Polish villages with axes, fire, and planned sweeps.
- Clergy, local elites, and mixed families were targeted as community anchors.
- German occupation created the vacuum; Ukrainian nationalist command drove the ethnic project.
- Polish Home Army and civilian self-defense retaliations killed Ukrainian civilians in turn.
- Memory politics in independent Ukraine and Poland still fight over naming and numbers.
